The U.S. Mint is producing a new commemorative $1 coin featuring President Donald Trump for the nation’s 250th anniversary. The news was confirmed by the Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. The commemorative currency is scheduled to be released this fall. Meanwhile, crypto markets saw a steep sell-off in $TRUMP-themed memecoins following broader market volatility, though this was unrelated to the official Mint announcement.
The coin is designed in such a way that words like “Liberty”, In God we Trust, and “1776-2026” are imprinted on the front side of the coin and the image of the bald eagle from the President’s seal is imprinted on the rear side. The coin has a gold-like finish, is made from non-precious metals, and has an image of President Trump on the front side. President Trump is feeling very honoured with the publication of this commemorative coin. In an interview with Fox Business, he said, “They gave me a coin. That’s very unusual from what I understand”.
Controversies Related To Trump’s Face on the Coin
The U.S. Treasury Department’s $1 commemorative coin featuring Donald Trump has sparked several major controversies. The Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005 and historical 1866 statutes generally prohibit living or recently deceased individuals from appearing on U.S. currency. While the Treasury cites past exceptions like Calvin Coolidge in 1926, critics argue that putting a sitting president’s face on a legal tender breaks this precedent.
The previous design of the coin was Trump clenching his fist and the motto “fight, fight, fight” in reference to the 2024 assassination attempt on him. However, this design was removed due to widespread public backlash. The finalized version features his profile alongside a bald eagle.
Other than the issue related to this commemorative coin, the Treasury Department’s move to include Trump’s signature on all paper currencies has sparked a new controversy. The inclusion of a sitting president’s signature on the currency is against tradition and has caused widespread protest from the opposition.
White House Sparked $TRUMP Memecoin Selloff
The White House’s announcement of issuing a coin with Trump’s image on it has briefly sparked a sell-off of $TRUMP memecoin. The announcement temporarily confused the market, dropping the $TRUMP cryptocurrency’s price to around $1.56 from $1.59. The White House had posted a nine-second-long video on the X platform about the newly launched physical coin, which sparked all the confusion.
The $TRUMP token is currently trading 97.88% below its all-time high price of $73.43, which was achieved in January 2025. However, the current controversy regarding the physical coin has only had a peripheral effect on the $TRUMP coin’s price crash; the major causes were different, such as extreme speculation, market volatility, and liquidity injections.
Despite the plunge in its price and its stake in the market, Trump and the companies run by his family members have earned big as they retained a majority of the coin supply and generated millions in transaction fees.
Impact of the New Coin on the Market
As the new physical coin was issued by breaking the age-old tradition of not imprinting a living person’s image on a coin, the coin is expected to drive massive demand in the numismatic market. Dealers and private investors have predicted that the coin will see significant demand due to speculation by coin collectors.
The decision to mint this commemorative coin has sparked widespread debate among the supporters and opponents of President Donald Trump. Many of his opponents are against the politicization of the national currency, while his supporters view the coin as a patriotic tribute to Trump’s contribution to the country. The opposition is also concerned that Trump will use the national currency for his personal financial gain.
Even thought he physical coin is different from the $TRUMP memecoin, it rides on the cultural wave of the digital asset markets associated with the President. Trump-affiliated digital assets and the $TRUMP meme coin have heavily influenced crypto market liquidity in the past. Public financial disclosures reveal that Trump has personally profited by over a billion dollars from these crypto and token-related ventures. However, retail investors in these meme coins have suffered collective losses due to high volatility and subsequent price crashes. Critics of the physical coin also foresee such losses to the retail investors while Trump remains untouched.
