US Government’s $297M Crypto Move Explained: Bitcoin and Ether Sent to Coinbase Prime

US Government’s $297M Crypto Move

The U.S. government has once more transferred nearly $300 million worth of cryptocurrency. An estimated $297 million worth of Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH) was moved to Coinbase Prime. The transaction was done on July 13th, 2026, and had 3,940 BTC worth around $244 million and 30,014 ETH valued at around $53 million.

Government wallets occasionally showcase large movements, which can lead to market excitement about the potential selling of assets. But in the presence, the market analysts have unanimously concluded that the latest movement is mostly tied to custody management and administrative asset consolidation rather than a liquidation event in the near future.

The transfer also comes at a moment when there are ongoing discussions pertaining to the U.S. government’s Strategic Bitcoin Reserve policy signed off by Donald Trump last year. The existing policy has another layer of intrigue to the otherwise routine operational transaction from the government wallet.

Key Takeaways

  • The U.S. government transferred an estimated $297 million in Bitcoin and Ether to Coinbase Prime.
  • The transaction included 3,940 BTC and 30,014 ETH.
  • The assets originated from multiple criminal forfeiture cases.
  • Analysts view the move as an administrative custody transfer rather than a confirmed sell signal.
  • The transfer sparked discussions about the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve established in 2025.
  • Bitcoin and Ether prices remained relatively stable following the transaction.
  • The U.S. government still holds an estimated $20.6 billion in digital assets.

The Origins of the Transferred Cryptocurrencies

The cryptocurrencies in question were seized by federal law enforcement and are part of several high-profile crimes related to the crypto market.

Ryan Farace aka. XANAXMAN

A part of the total Bitcoin in the assets was seized from Ryan Farace, who was convicted for a scheme to manufacture and distribute alprazolam tablets (sold under the brand name “Xanax”) in exchange for Bitcoin through sales on darknet marketplaces, where he operated under the alias “XANAXMAN.”

Federal authorities have confiscated the Bitcoins linked to Farace’s drug trafficking. Ryand and his father, Joseph Farace, were made to forfeit all of the Bitcoin seized during the investigation, which later became part of government-controlled digital asset holdings.

BTC-e Exchange

BTC-e was one of the world’s largest virtual currency exchanges. From its inception in 2011 until its closure and arrest of Alexander Vinnik, one of the exchange’s co-founders, in 2017, it processed more than $9 billion in transactions and was used by over one million users worldwide.

The exchange was widely used by cyber criminals who engaged in illegal activities such as computer intrusions and hacking, ransomware attacks, identity theft schemes, and narcotics distribution rings. Vinnik operated the platform with the intent to promote these unlawful activities. BTC-e was not registered with the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), as federal law requires.

Brian Krewson

The Ether included in the seized cryptocurrencies list mainly comes from the 30,000 ETH seized from former Oracle employee Brian Krewson. The ETH is associated with a $54 million cryptocurrency money-laundering case. Krewson is alleged to have assisted convicted drug traffickers Christopher Castelluzzo and Luke Atwell in storing and laundering cryptocurrency they procured as part of their drug trafficking on the dark web.

Why is the Transfer in the News?

The transfer made the news due to the supposed contradictory sale of Bitcoin. Through President Donald Trump’s March 2025 executive order, seized Bitcoin should not be sold but must go into the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve.

The current transfer doesn’t confirm a sale as Coinbase Prime offers institutional clients, including the U.S. government, custody, trading, financing, and staking services. The transfer is simply considered a consolidation of assets for management as of now.

This is not the first instance of authorities moving seized crypto assets to Coinbase Prime. The year 2026 has seen multiple such transfers of various amounts of cryptocurrenices and amounts.

The Market’s Reaction to the Transfer

Even with this transfer being one of the largest from government-linked wallets this year, the market had a muted reaction, with the crypto market remaining highly stable, with BTC and ETH fluctuating by sub-1% rates following the on-chain movement.

The $297 million portion is only a fraction of the U.S. government’s overall crypto stockpile. U.S. government wallets are estimated to hold around $20.6 billion in crypto assets, which is one of the largest in the global market. The holdings include a reported amount of around 325,000 BTC, 28,000 ETH, 146 million USDT, and 750 Wrappd Bitcoin (WBTC).

Conclusion

The US Government’s $297M crypto move in Bitcoin and Ether to Coinbase Prime made the headlines solely due to the size of the assets. All the evidence about the transfer hints at the transaction being a mere administrative custody move.

Only in case of further development related to the assets, such as movement off Coinbase Prime or conversion to stablecoins, would it signal the signs of an upcoming sale window.
